Do You Need a DJ, or Can You Use Spotify?

Hey there events people! Planning an event and wondering whether you should budget for a DJ or just hit play on a Spotify playlist? It’s a dilemma many of us face, whether it’s a gala dinner, a retro party, a classy soiree, or even networking sessions. In this blog post, we’ll give you links to Spotify playlists, plus we’ll dive into the latest Spotify DJ feature.

The Spotify Playlists You Need:
Before we dive into the DJ vs. Spotify showdown, here are some killer Spotify playlists tailored for different events:

Gala Dinner: For an elegant evening, set the mood with these selections. The first one’s my favourite!

Networking Sessions: Instrumental is usually best because people just wanna get talkin’.

Themed Parties: Is it a disco night? Shanghai Swing Soiree? Retro Rewind? Great Gatsby?

Seminars and Awards: Be an events DJ yourself! Use some of these tracks to create a grandiose effect of the awardee walking up on stage to receive the Golden Globe!

Now, let’s talk about Spotify’s latest DJ feature.

The Latest Spotify DJ Feature: Is It a Hit or Miss?
Spotify’s AI DJ feature has certainly piqued the interest of music enthusiasts. While it offers a unique approach to music curation and discovery, it doesn’t always hit the mark. We’ve reviewed it and here’s what we found.

  • Genre Mix-up: The feature sometimes throws in a bewildering mix of genres that might not work together seamlessly. Your gala dinner crowd might not appreciate a sudden switch from classical to hip-hop.
  • Random Selection: Spotify’s DJ feature essentially takes your most-played tracks and compiles them randomly, while introducing new music based on your history’s algorithms. This means The Cure’s “Ms. Van Gogh’s Instrumental Demo” could unexpectedly interrupt a trance playlist, which doesn’t scream “smooth transition.”
  • Interjection with a Fake Human Voice: This will sound amusing or possibly disturbing. What would be cool is to having the voice of Britney Spears introduce Yeah Yeah Yeahs next release.
  • Nothing groundbreaking for Spotify: For a platform full of personalised playlists, I didn’t think this was exceptionally different.

The summary: Not appropriate for event-use.
It’s possibly great for personal use, but again, there’s already many other ways to discover music that’s tailored to your liking, e.g. Discover Weekly, Daily Mix etc
What’s the real added value for this feature?

When Do You Need a DJ?
Now, let’s address the big question: when should you opt for a DJ instead of Spotify?

  1. Cool Factor and Branding: If your event is all about creating a unique, unforgettable experience and showcasing your brand, a DJ can help you stand out. They can personalise the music to match your event’s theme and style.
  2. Reading the Crowd: DJs are skilled at reading the crowd’s energy and adjusting the music accordingly.
  3. Authenticity of Providing Music: Hiring a DJ brings a personal touch to your event. They can mix and match tracks, respond to requests, and even throw in some surprise tunes that will leave a lasting impression.

In conclusion, while Spotify can be a convenient and cost-effective option for some events, a DJ brings a level of expertise and authenticity that can elevate your gathering to the next level. Consider your event’s goals, audience, and desired atmosphere when making your decision. After all, the right music can make or break any party!
